How to Get to the Sift in Minecraft (2026)

The Sift has no vanilla portal yet. Here's how it's entered in Minecraft Dungeons 2, what Mojang has confirmed for Java and Bedrock in 2027, and which mods work today.

You cannot currently travel to the Sift in vanilla Minecraft. The fourth dimension was announced at Minecraft LIVE on September 26, 2026, debuts in Minecraft Dungeons II (released September 29, 2026), and arrives in Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027 — Mojang has not announced a specific date or an entry method. No portal frame, ritual, or structure in the current game leads to the Sift, so every tutorial showing a "working Sift portal" today is fake or modded. This guide covers what actually exists: the confirmed lore-side entry, the Dungeons II route, the fan mods that recreate the dimension, and how to prepare your world for the 2027 update.

Why There Is No Vanilla Portal Right Now

Minecraft's three existing dimensions all have concrete entry mechanics: build a Nether portal from obsidian, or reach the End through a stronghold's End Portal. The Sift has neither — Mojang has deliberately not revealed how players will travel there in 2027.

What makes this frustrating is that lore documentation describes an entry path in the fiction: portals into the Sift open through the Deep Dark, powered by a Note Block Machine. In the story, the Illager High Council first discovered the dimension and mastered this portal craft, and the Grand Illusioner's staff can tear dimensional rifts outright. Whether any of this becomes a player-facing mechanic in vanilla — a structure to find, a block to activate, a boss to defeat — has not been announced.

Practical rules for the wait:

  • Do not build obsidian portals to "the Sift." Obsidian portals go to the Nether. Full stop.
  • Do not trust portal tutorials claiming a working vanilla Sift portal in current versions. None exists.
  • Deep Dark structures are still worth exploring — they are the thematic on-ramp to the Sift, and our Ancient City guide covers their loot and the Warden threat you will want practice against.

How You Enter the Sift in Minecraft Dungeons II

The only official way to set foot in the Sift today is Minecraft Dungeons II, released September 29, 2026 on PC and Xbox (day one on Game Pass). There is no portal-building puzzle here either — the Sift is a core location in the campaign, reached as the story takes you through it.

The story context: the Illager High Council uses the souls of the Sift to tear dimensional rifts, and their incursions into the dimension are stripping it of resources and souls. Your fight runs straight into that invasion. Travel happens through those dimensional rifts — including rifts torn by the Grand Illusioner's staff — rather than a fixed portal you construct.

What you find there matches the confirmed dimension design: red-orange stone, iridescent water, sculk, dangerous ichor, the native Sifters (hostile in D2 because of the illager invasion), and bosses including The Monarch, Sculk Monstrosity, and Harmonizer.

The 2027 Vanilla Release: What's Confirmed

Mojang has confirmed the Sift comes to both Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027, with no date attached. Confirmed for the vanilla version so far:

  • The dimension environment: red-orange stone, green vegetation, rainbow-colored water, sculk, and ichor.
  • The confirmed biomes: Meadows (the entry area), Lullaby Hills, Singer's Meadow, and The Carapace, with Echo Den reported but unconfirmed.
  • Native Sifters, not actively hostile in vanilla — and Blub, one of the named Sifters from Dungeons II, is confirmed to be coming to vanilla.
  • The three Sift tides mechanic that changes soul collection and movement.

Not confirmed: the entry method. That is the single most important unanswered question for survival players, because it determines the entire progression route — whether reaching the Sift means a buildable portal, a discovered structure, or a boss-kill gate in the Deep Dark. Until Mojang says so, any survival prep beyond Deep Dark readiness is guesswork.

What the Lore Tells Us About Entry

Even without a confirmed mechanic, the story material narrows the possibilities. Every documented path into the Sift runs through one of three doors:

  1. The Deep Dark portal. Wiki documentation describes Sift portals opening through the Deep Dark, powered by a Note Block Machine. A machine built from note blocks implies sound is the key — which fits a dimension whose native ground (sculk) hears everything. Whether this becomes something players can build, or a structure players find already humming, is unconfirmed.
  2. The Grand Illusioner's staff. In Dungeons II lore, this artifact tears dimensional rifts outright. If vanilla borrows the idea, the entry could be gated behind a boss fight rather than a crafting recipe.
  3. The Illager High Council's portal craft. The Council discovered the Sift first and mastered portal-making first — story beats that suggest the vanilla entry may involve an illager structure or a defeated illager stronghold, mirroring how strongholds gate the End.

None of these three is confirmed as the vanilla mechanic. They are the only entry concepts that exist in official material, which makes them the only reasonable guesses — and reasons to keep your Deep Dark gear sharp.

What to Bring When the Update Lands

Survival players can pre-stage a Sift expedition kit now, based on what the dimension's confirmed traits demand:

  • Wool and Swift Sneak boots. A sculk-native world means sculk sensors and shriekers are ambient hazards, not dungeon features. Quiet movement is the baseline survival skill.
  • Night vision and slow falling potions. Unfamiliar terrain, alien water, and unknown verticality argue for maximum information and fall protection.
  • A shield and strong armor. Three confirmed bosses — The Monarch, Sculk Monstrosity, and Harmonizer — guarantee endgame-tier combat.
  • Soul-related gear. The dimension's economy is souls, via the Sift tides. Whatever soul-adjacent items you already own may matter more there than anywhere else.
  • Nothing irreplaceable, first trip. Ichor is a confirmed dangerous liquid with unknown mechanics — treat the first expedition like a first Nether trip: expendable gear, escape plan, no heirlooms.

This list is preparation, not prescription — Mojang may well change the survival calculus when the entry method is revealed.

Playing Early With Mods (Fan-Made)

Two fan projects recreate the dimension for players who do not want to wait or buy Dungeons II:

ModWhat it is
Mielon's The SiftFan-made recreation of the Sift dimension
Wellspring modFan-made project using the dimension's internal codename

Set expectations correctly before installing either:

  • These are not official and not affiliated with Mojang. They are interpretations built from the announcement material, not ports of the real thing.
  • Their mechanics — recipes, portal construction, mob stats — are invented by the mod authors and will not match Mojang's 2027 implementation.
  • They will not convert or transfer into the official 2027 update. Anything you build in a modded Sift stays in that modded world.

How to Prepare Your World for 2027

Nothing is required today, but three kinds of prep will pay off when the update lands:

  1. Conquer the Deep Dark early. The Sift is thematically and lore-wise connected to sculk — corrupted sculk originates in the Sift — and the documented portal fiction is anchored in the Deep Dark. Warden-dodging practice in an Ancient City is the most relevant skill-building available.
  2. Stock sculk-tier gear. Whatever the entry mechanism turns out to be, a dimension built around sound-reactive sculk, dangerous liquids, and soul mechanics rewards players already comfortable with Swift Sneak boots, wool-based sneaking, and night vision tactics.
  3. Watch official channels, not rumors. Mojang will reveal the entry method through snapshots or official posts. Snapshot leaks routinely invent portal mechanics that never ship — the 26.4 snapshot cycle is already generating plenty of that noise.
