Minecraft Elytra Guide: How to Get and Fly With Rockets

Get Minecraft's Elytra and master flight: End Ship locations, firework rocket crafting, flight techniques, durability repair with phantom membranes, and crash avoidance.

The Elytra is Minecraft's only true flight item — wings that turn long-distance travel from a chore into a rocket-powered glide across thousands of blocks. There's exactly one way to get your first pair: loot an End Ship in the outer End islands after defeating the Ender Dragon. This guide covers the full acquisition route, firework rocket crafting, the flight techniques (and fatal mistakes) every new pilot needs, and how to repair Elytra forever once you own a pair.

Both Java and Bedrock fly identically for these purposes; the main differences are elytra-item controls on Bedrock touchscreens and slightly different firework boost feel.

Prerequisites: Reaching the Outer End

Elytra don't spawn in the overworld or Nether — the route runs through the End:

  1. Kill the Ender Dragon (or find a server where it's already dead). Full strategy is in our Ender Dragon guide.
  2. Enter the End gateway portal: the dragon's death spawns a small bedrock portal floating at the main island's edge. Throw an Ender Pearl into it to teleport ~1,000 blocks out to the outer islands.
  3. Bridge or build safely: the gateway exit usually hovers over the void. Bring end stone or cobble for a landing platform, and never walk backward while pearl-ing.
  4. From there, outer islands stretch outward in every direction — End Cities generate on the larger ones.

Finding an End Ship (Where the Elytra Lives)

Every End City has a chance to spawn with an End Ship floating beside the city's tallest tower — a small boat-shaped structure suspended in the air, often with no bridge connecting it (you'll build your own or pillar across).

Ship-spawn odds: roughly 50% of End Cities generate with a ship in modern versions (varies slightly by version). If the city has no ship, move to the next city — cities chain along the outer islands every few hundred blocks.

What the ship contains:

  • 2 loot chests: loot includes iron ingots, gold ingots, diamonds, emeralds, enchanted diamond gear, and saddles.
  • 1 Elytra, hanging in an item frame in the ship's bow display room — break the frame to collect it. This is the only Elytra in the structure; guard it with your inventory life.
  • The ship deck also has a shulker guarding it — Shulker bullets levitate you; knock the bullet out with your shield or kill the shulker from range first. Falling off the ship while levitated and hit mid-air is the classic End death.

Step-by-Step: First Elytra Run

  1. Gear check: diamond armor (Feather Falling IV boots), bow + arrows, blocks, water bucket is useless here — bring slow falling potions instead, plus ender pearls for emergency teleports and a crafting table + rockets if returning trips are planned.
  2. Gateway out: pearl through the End gateway with a pearl, land, platform up.
  3. City sweep: cities generate on island clusters; loot the main tower first (shulkers on the ramps — shield their bullets).
  4. Spot the ship: from the top tower, look outward and slightly down for the floating hull. Pillar or bridge to it, ideally with a safety rail.
  5. De-shulker the deck: kill or shield-tank the deck shulker before opening anything.
  6. Grab the Elytra from the bow item frame, loot both chests, and mark the ship coordinates — ships are great rocket-refuel waypoints for later runs.
  7. Exit strategy: pearl back through gateways toward the main island, or bridge to a city tower and set your return route. Never fly for the first time over the void with no safety plan.

Firework Rockets: Your Engine

Elytra alone only glide — firework rockets provide thrust. Craft them at any crafting table:

IngredientsRecipeResult
1 Paper + 1 GunpowderStandard craft (3 rockets)Flight duration 1 — short boost
1 Paper + 2 GunpowderStandard craft (3 rockets)Flight duration 2 — medium boost
1 Paper + 3 GunpowderStandard craft (3 rockets)Flight duration 3 — max boost, best travel value

Critical details:

  • No star = safe boost. Craft rockets WITHOUT a firework star — plain paper+gunpowder rockets propel you. Rockets with stars explode and damage you when used mid-flight. This is the #1 beginner death.
  • Duration rating = thrust time per rocket. Duration 3 rockets give the longest boost per click.
  • Gunpowder supply: a creeper farm (or charged-creeper-free simple trap) makes rockets effectively infinite. Paper needs a sugarcane farm — both are covered in our automatic farm guide.
  • Holding a crossbow with rockets is a weapon path, unrelated to flight — don't confuse the two uses.

Flight Techniques

Basic launch

  1. Equip the Elytra (chestplate slot) and keep rockets in your hotbar (or off-hand for one-click boosting).
  2. Jump from a high place (20+ blocks) and press jump again mid-air to deploy the wings.
  3. Immediately use a rocket (right-click/interact) — you accelerate horizontally with a visible trail.
  4. Fire another rocket each time speed decays. Spacing them out (rather than spamming) maximizes distance per rocket.

Sustained flight (rocket-free speed control)

  • Dive to gain speed: pitch the camera down ~30–45°; gravity converts to speed.
  • Pull up to trade speed for altitude: at high speed, pitch up smoothly — you can climb back to launch height and even above it.
  • The phugoid rhythm: alternate dive/pull-up cycles to extend range between rockets dramatically. Master this and one duration-3 rocket carries you 1,000+ blocks.
  • Turning: yaw gently; hard turns bleed airspeed. Plan wide arcs.
  • Stall margin: sustained climbs steeper than ~45° bleed speed until you stall into a fall — keep climbs shallow and dive first when in doubt.

Landing

  • Aim at open flat ground, flare (pitch up) at the last moment to bleed speed, and take the final 2–3 blocks as a fall (Feather Falling makes it trivial).
  • High-speed water landings drop you into the drink and zero your momentum — treat water as a crash, not a runway.
  • Landing in a 2-block-deep trench or against a wall = crash. Scan for clear approach lines before committing.

Durability, Repair, and Upgrades

  • Elytra have 432 durability points; each second of flight costs ~1 point. Two long trips can halve a fresh pair.
  • Mending is mandatory long-term: XP orbs you collect (in flight or on landing) repair the wings automatically. Pair with Unbreaking III (via anvil, from our enchanting guide) to triple effective durability.
  • Phantom membrane repair (no XP needed): combine Elytra + 1 membrane on an anvil — restores 108 durability (25%) per membrane. This is the pre-Mending fallback and the standard fix for freshly-looted damaged pairs.
  • Phantom membranes drop from phantoms — which you'll farm anyway if you skip sleep often. A simple overnight insomnia farm supplies membranes passively.
  • Displaying Elytra on armor stands or item frames doesn't consume durability — only actual flight does.
  • Practical rule: never take an Elytra below ~20% durability into the End or a long overworld flight — mid-air breakage turns wings into a 200-block death sentence.

Travel Routes Once You Can Fly

  • Overworld highways: fly at Y 180–250 along marked beacon columns every 500 blocks — rockets and a Shulker box of spares cover thousands of blocks per trip.
  • Nether roof (Bedrock) / high tunnels (Java): the classic long-distance lane — flat and mostly mob-free. On Bedrock the flat bedrock roof at Y 128 is ideal; on Java, carve a 2-high tunnel near the ceiling instead. Ice-boat vs elytra ranges differ by route — test both on your world.
  • End island hopping: with slow falling + short rocket bursts, city-to-city hops take seconds instead of bridges.
  • Spawn-to-base commute: the everyday win — a 3,000-block base trip drops from ~20 minutes of walking to 90 seconds of flight.

Common Questions

Can I get Elytra without killing the dragon? On Java, outer End islands are unreachable until the dragon dies (gateway portal). There's no legitimate overworld Elytra source.

How many Elytra are in one End Ship? Exactly one. Loot multiple ships for spares.

Do wings work in the Nether? Yes — ceiling height and fire-damage hazards make it risky, but mechanics are identical.

What's the max flight speed? Firework-boosted flight reaches roughly 33 m/s; steep dives can momentarily exceed that before drag clamps in.
