Minecraft Wither Boss Guide: How to Summon and Beat It
Full Minecraft Wither boss guide: summon layout, wither skeleton skull farming, two-phase battle strategy, and how to use the nether star for a beacon.
To beat the Wither in Minecraft, build a T shape from 4 soul sand or soul soil blocks, place 3 wither skeleton skulls on the top row, back away about 20 blocks, and wait out the charge-up explosion. Fight phase one with a bow from behind cover, then switch to melee at point-blank range once it drops below half health and becomes immune to arrows. The reward is always exactly 1 nether star — the only item that can craft a beacon.
This guide covers the exact summon layout, the fastest way to farm wither skeleton skulls, a two-phase battle plan, and how the Wither compares to the Ender Dragon and the Warden.
Wither Stats at a Glance
| Property | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Health | 300 (150 hearts) | 600 (300 hearts) |
| Melee attack (Normal) | 8 damage | 8 damage |
| Skull projectile | 5 damage + Wither II for 10s | 8 damage + Wither II for 12s |
| Spawn explosion | ~Power 7 blast in a small radius | Larger, more destructive blast |
| Armor behavior | Takes reduced damage like a normal mob | Breaks blocks to path toward you |
| Immunities | Fire, lava, drowning, arrows below 50% HP (Java) | Fire, lava, drowning |
Two undead-specific facts that change your loadout:
- The Wither counts as an undead mob, so the Smite enchantment deals bonus damage to it — Smite V adds 12.5 extra damage per hit.
- Because it is undead, splash potions of Healing damage it and splash potions of Harming heal it. Throw Healing splashes if you use potions offensively; never Harming.
The Bedrock Wither has double the health, moves faster while you shoot it in phase one, and phases through blocks more aggressively — most players find the Bedrock fight noticeably harder even though the summon layout is identical in both editions.
Summoning: The Exact Layout
The structure is a capital letter T made of 4 soul sand (or soul soil, or a mix), with 3 wither skeleton skulls on top:
| Layer | Blocks |
|---|---|
| Top row (3 wide) | Skull, soul sand with skull, skull |
| Below center | 1 soul sand |
| Below that | 1 soul sand |
Step by step:
- Place one soul sand block, then stack a second directly on top of it — a 2-tall column.
- Place one soul sand on the left side of the upper block and one on the right side. You now have a T: 3 blocks wide at the top, 1 center column hanging below.
- Place a wither skeleton skull on each of the three top soul sand blocks.
- The moment the third skull is placed, the Wither begins spawning with a visible health-bar charge animation and is invulnerable for about 4 seconds, then explodes.
Rules that matter: the T must be built upright (it cannot be rotated sideways or upside down), soul sand and soul soil are interchangeable in any position, and the top of the structure needs clear air — the boss hitbox is bigger than the frame, so do not summon it under a ceiling you care about. Summon at least 30 blocks from anything built, or in a desert/ocean surface you can crater.
Farming Wither Skeleton Skulls
Wither skeletons spawn only on nether fortress platforms and walkways. They are 2.4 blocks tall, which means 2-block-high gaps block them — useful for building safe fighting pens at a fortress.
| Drop | Base Rate | With Looting III |
|---|---|---|
| Wither skeleton skull | 2.5% | 5.5% |
| Stone sword | 8.5% | 8.5% |
| Coal | 0–1 | 0–1 (Fortune does not affect it here) |
Skull farming loop:
- Locate a nether fortress. In Java they generate in strips along the X axis, so traveling east or west raises your hit rate.
- Clear and light up a large fortress section, then build a fighting platform where wither skeletons funnel toward you.
- Kill with a Looting III sword. Expected average is roughly 18 kills per skull at base rate and about 18–40 kills at Looting III — variance is huge, and 60-kill dry streaks happen.
- Block their sword hits with a shield: wither skeleton melee applies the Wither effect, which blackens your hearts and can kill through full health.
The Wither effect counters are milk buckets (instant clear) and the enchanted golden apple (Absorption IV + Regeneration II out-heals the effect). Milk also wipes your positive buffs, so time it deliberately.
The Fight: Two Phases
Phase 1 — 100% to 50% Health: Ranged With Cover
- Place all 3 skulls, then sprint 20+ blocks away before the 4-second invulnerability window ends. The spawn explosion will trash the area where you stood.
- Build a 2-block-thick cover wall. The Wither's explosive skulls chip through single-layer cover quickly; cobblestone or netherrack in bulk (3+ stacks) lets you rebuild.
- Shoot with a Power V bow. In Java, the Wither cannot break blocks to reach you in phase one, so the pop-out-shoot-duck cycle works the whole way to half health. In Bedrock it chews through the wall toward you, so keep mobile and kite.
- Sustained fire beats burst fire: it briefly regenerates after taking hits, so do not stop shooting while it is visible.
Phase 2 — Below 50% Health: Melee at Its Face
- The moment it hits half health, the Wither gains arrow immunity (Java), grows armored visual cracks, and must be fought at melee range.
- Pre-buff: Potion of Strength II, enchanted golden apple (Absorption IV + Resistance from the apple; note apple Resistance does not stack with a beacon's, pick one source), and a Smite V sword.
- Run inside its hitbox and stay glued to it. Its skulls arc outward and consistently miss a target hugging the body — point-blank is the safest place in the fight.
- Swing continuously with Smite V. A netherite sword with Smite V does 18.5 base + 12.5 bonus per crit — the fastest phase-2 kill available without elaborate setups.
- Watch the Wither effect icon. When its timer drops under ~5 seconds, drink milk to reset it, re-buff Strength if you had it, and close distance again.
Full loadout checklist: Smite V netherite (or diamond) sword, Power V bow + 2–3 stacks of arrows, enchanted golden apple, 1–2 regular golden apples, 2 milk buckets, Strength II potion, 3 stacks of cobblestone, and blast protection armor.
The Wither Effect and How to Counter It
| Counter | Effect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Milk bucket | Instantly removes Wither | Clears all positive effects too — Strength, Resistance, Regeneration all gone |
| Enchanted golden apple | Absorption IV + Regeneration II + Resistance I for 5 min | Costs 8 gold blocks; the regeneration out-heals Wither II |
| Potion of Healing II | Instant heart restore when drunk | Heals the boss if splashed near it — drink, don't throw |
Milk timing is the core skill of phase 2. Drink too early and the effect gets reapplied with no buffs left; drink too late and the decay kills you through absorption hearts. Around 5 seconds remaining is the reliable window.
Loot: The Nether Star and Your First Beacon
The Wither always drops exactly 1 nether star plus 50 XP when killed by a player. The star is explosion-proof and lava-proof, but it despawns after 5 minutes like any item — pick it up immediately.
The only use: craft a beacon (1 nether star + 3 obsidian + 5 glass). Beacons need a mineral pyramid underneath — iron, gold, emerald, diamond, or netherite blocks:
| Pyramid Level | Base Size | Blocks Required | Effect Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3x3 | 9 blocks | ~20 blocks |
| 2 | 5x5 | +34 blocks | ~30 blocks |
| 3 | 7x7 | +49 blocks | ~40 blocks |
| 4 | 9x9 | +81 blocks (173 total) | ~50 blocks |
Even a level-1 pyramid gives Speed or Haste in a small radius; a full level-4 pyramid unlocks Haste II, which makes pickaxe mining dramatically faster — the main reason players fight the Wither in the first place.
Boss Comparison: Ender Dragon vs Wither vs Warden
| Metric | Ender Dragon | Wither | Warden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health | 200 | 300 (Java) / 600 (Bedrock) | 500 |
| Arena | The End — fixed, open | Overworld surface — you choose it | Deep Dark — its home turf, darkness |
| Signature attack | Dragon fireballs + perch charges | Explosive skulls + Wither effect | Sonic boom: 30 damage, ignores armor and shields |
| Fight skipped? | No (portal requires the kill) | No (you summon it for the star) | Yes — sneak or distraction |
| Unique reward | Dragon egg + end gateway + 12,000 XP | 1 nether star → beacon | None — no drops, no reason to fight |
| Difficulty | Medium — arena mechanics, not raw DPS | Hard (Bedrock) / Medium-Hard (Java) | Hardest raw stat-check, trivial to avoid |
Recommended order: Ender Dragon first (gateways, XP, egg), then Nether progression for netherite and skulls, then the Wither near your beacon site. The Warden guards ancient cities with no unique loot, so it is a self-imposed challenge — engaging it is optional and usually a mistake.
Common Fatal Mistakes
- Summoning near your base — the spawn explosion craters terrain and the boss breaks blocks toward you afterward. Summon far away, on flat open ground.
- Staying ranged in phase 2 — arrows stop working below half health in Java; hugging the hitbox is the only reliable damage.
- Drinking milk the instant the Wither effect lands — you erase your own Strength and Resistance. Wait until ~5 seconds remain on the timer.
- Skimping on blocks — skulls destroy cover in phase 1. Three stacks of cobble is the floor, not the ceiling.
- Sharpness instead of Smite — against this one undead boss, Smite V beats Sharpness V by a clean margin per hit.
