How to Tame a Horse in Minecraft (2026)
Taming a horse in Minecraft takes patience, not items. Learn the mounting trick, how to speed it up with food, and what to do once it's tamed.
To tame a horse in Minecraft, approach an adult horse with an empty hand and press the use button to mount it. The horse will almost always buck you off at first — each attempt raises its hidden "temper" stat, and after roughly five to twelve tries (sometimes fewer, sometimes up to twenty) a horse accepts the ride and hearts appear. That's the entire taming process: no food is required, and no taming item exists. Horses spawn ready to be broken the moment you find them, unlike wolves or cats, which need feeding. This guide covers where to find horses, how to tame one fast, and the three things you must do after taming — saddle it, armor it, and learn its stats — so your first ride doesn't end badly.
Where to Find Horses
Horses spawn in two kinds of places:
- Plains and savannas — the classic home of wild horse herds. Herds of two to six horses roam these open biomes, usually mixed with donkeys on rare occasions.
- Villages — some plains and savanna village animal pens generate with horses and donkeys already inside, which saves you a tracking trip.
Horses come in seven base colors (white, creamy, chestnut, brown, black, gray, dark brown) with a handful of marking patterns, so a single herd can look quite varied. All colors tame identically.
If you're exploring, bring a lead (four string plus one slimeball) so you can drag your newly tamed horse home instead of riding it through unexplored terrain. And keep your expectations straight about lookalikes: donkeys have longer ears and can carry chests, mules are the sterile horse-donkey hybrid, and skeleton horses only appear from trap events and cannot be tamed conventionally. For a broader look at every animal in the game, see our all mobs list.
How to Tame a Horse, Step by Step
- Empty your hand. You cannot tame a horse while holding an item — make sure nothing is in your main hand, or the mount attempt simply won't happen.
- Right-click (Java) or press Use (Bedrock) on the horse. You'll climb on its back. Hold nothing else in your offhand that triggers a block interaction.
- Expect to be bucked off. A wild horse rears, and you're thrown to the ground after a second or two. Each attempt is a hidden dice roll — every try adds to the horse's temper, making the next roll easier.
- Remount immediately. There's no cooldown. Hop back on the moment you land. Most horses tame within five to twelve attempts.
- Watch for hearts. When the horse stops bucking and red heart particles appear, it is tamed. From this point on it will never despawn (once named or led into a pen, at least) and you can open its inventory.
Feeding before mounting is optional but speeds things up. Each of these foods raises temper instantly, cutting down the number of buck-offs:
| Food | Temper boost | Heals |
|---|---|---|
| Golden apple / enchanted golden apple | +100 (tames instantly in practice) | 10 HP |
| Golden carrot | +60 | 4 HP |
| Apple | +3 | 3 HP |
| Bread | +3 | 5 HP |
| Wheat | +3 | 2 HP |
| Sugar | +3 | 1 HP |
A single golden carrot or apple usually finishes the job on the next mount. That's the fastest route if you have a gold farm; otherwise just keep remounting, since patience costs nothing.
After Taming: Saddle First, Everything Else Second
A tamed horse still cannot be steered without a saddle. Here's the post-taming checklist:
- Open the horse's inventory. While mounted or standing next to it, press the use button with an empty hand (or hold sneak and press it) to open the horse's own inventory screen.
- Equip a saddle in the saddle slot. Saddles cannot be crafted — get them from dungeon, desert pyramid, village weaponsmith, bastion, or End city chests, by fishing, or from piglin bartering (Java). Once saddled, you steer with the normal movement keys and dismount with sneak.
- Equip horse armor in the armor slot. Iron, golden, and diamond horse armor reduce incoming damage (diamond absorbs the most), and all three are found only in generated chests — like saddles, they can't be crafted. Leather horse armor is the exception: it's craftable from seven leather and can even be dyed. Armor also matters because horses take fall damage like you do and can be shot at by skeletons.
- Name it with a name tag if you want to guarantee it never despawns.
With a saddle on, note the riding quirks: horses automatically clear one-block steps and can jump up to about five blocks high, with jump strength varying per horse. The jump charge bar fills while you hold the jump key — release at the top for a full-height leap. Horses also travel faster than sprinting players (the best ones approach 14+ blocks per second), which makes them the best early-game transport before elytra.
Horse Stats Are Born, Not Trained
Every horse gets a random set of stats when it spawns or is bred, and nothing you do after taming changes them:
- Health: 15 to 30 HP, shown by your mount's hearts when riding.
- Speed: roughly 4.8 to 14.5 blocks per second.
- Jump strength: roughly 1.1 to 5.3 blocks high.
You can't see these numbers in-game without mods, but a two-minute test ride tells you everything: gallop in a straight line, jump a few walls, and compare. If you want to breed horses for a better mount, the foal averages its parents' stats with some random variance, so pairing your two fastest horses is how you build a super-horse over generations. Our passive mobs breeding guide covers the breeding food and cooldowns, and our dedicated breeding-horses walkthrough goes deep on stat math.
Common Problems and Fixes
- The horse keeps throwing me off. That's normal. Keep remounting — it's a numbers game. If you have golden food, feed it first to skip most attempts.
- I tamed it but it won't move. You have no saddle equipped. There is no way to craft one; go chest-hunting or fish for one.
- It won't follow me. Horses don't follow food like cows and sheep. Use a lead, or ride it home.
- My horse took fall damage. Horses have no natural fall-damage protection. High-jumping off cliffs is the classic way to lose one — diamond horse armor softens but doesn't prevent it.
- A skeleton horse spawned near lightning. Skeleton trap horses look tameable but spawn four skeleton riders on hard difficulty. The horses become tameable and rideable only after the riders are killed.
