What Does Density Do in Minecraft? Mace Enchant Guide
What does Density do in Minecraft? The mace enchantment adds 0.5 extra damage per block fallen per level — scaling table, vs Breach, how to get it.
Density is a mace-exclusive enchantment added in the 1.21 Tricky Trials update. It increases the mace's smash-attack bonus damage by 0.5 damage per block fallen per level — up to 2.5 extra damage per block at Density V. Because the mace already deals enormous damage on long falls, Density multiplies the one stat the weapon is built around, making it the best PvE enchantment for the mace. It is mutually exclusive with the mace's other two enchantments, Breach and Wind Burst.
How Density Works
The mace has a unique damage rule: a normal hit deals 6–7 damage, but if you fall at least 1.5 blocks before hitting, you land a smash attack whose bonus scales with fall distance — roughly 4 extra damage for the first 3 blocks, then 2 per block from 3 to 8, and 4 per block beyond 8 blocks of falling. Density boosts that entire bonus:
| Fall Distance | Mace Bonus (No Density) | Bonus with Density V |
|---|---|---|
| 3 blocks | +4 | +11.5 |
| 5 blocks | +8 | +20.5 |
| 8 blocks | +14 | +34 |
| 10 blocks | +22 | +54 |
The table shows the enchantment's scaling direction; exact values shift slightly by edition and how the game counts the final block. The key takeaway holds regardless: Density V adds up to +2.5 damage per fallen block, and long falls turn the mace into the hardest-hitting melee weapon in vanilla Minecraft — capable of one-shotting wardens and the Ender Dragon from a sufficient height.
Two mechanical notes:
- Density only matters on hits where the smash bonus applies. A ground-level mace hit gains nothing.
- The bonus scales with the fall, so Density rewards positioning: ledges, ender-pearl tosses upward, wind charges, and bubble columns all set up bigger smashes.
Density vs Breach vs Wind Burst
The three mace enchantments are mutually exclusive — one per mace:
| Enchantment | Effect | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Density I–V | +0.5 damage per fallen block per level | PvE smash damage |
| Breach I–IV | Cuts target armor effectiveness 15% per level | PvP vs armored players |
| Wind Burst I–III | Bounces you up after a smash, enabling chains | Mobility and combos |
Choose Density when your targets are unarmored or you can arrange big drops — ordinary survival combat, boss fights, and mob farming. Choose Breach when every opponent wears full netherite, which is the standard PvP case; Density's raw bonus loses a large share to armor mitigation there. Choose Wind Burst when you value the mace as a movement and combo tool more than single-hit damage. For the armor-piercing option in detail, see what Breach does in Minecraft.
How to Get Density
Density comes from the 1.21 trial-chambers loot system:
- Vaults in trial chambers: regular vaults (opened with Trial Keys) can roll Density books and already-enchanted maces across all levels up to V.
- Ominous Vaults: opened with Ominous Trial Keys from ominous trials — the richer pool and the most reliable route to a top-level Density V book.
- Enchanted maces from vaults: sometimes the vault hands you a mace with Density pre-applied.
Getting a Trial Key requires clearing a trial spawner wave in the chamber; Ominous Trial Keys require the harder ominous variant, unlocked by drinking an Ominous Bottle dropped by raid captains. Both keys are single-use per vault, so farming Density books means repeating trials — stock up on food and blocks before each run.
The mace itself is crafted from a heavy core (trial-chamber ominous vault reward) plus a breeze rod (dropped by breezes during the trial). Density is a treasure-tier enchantment: it does not appear on the enchanting table, and no villager sells it, so vault farming is the only vanilla source. Bring recovery gear — trial chambers respawn their challenges via trial spawners, and ominous variants hit harder.
Using a Density Mace Well
A practical setup pairs Density V with the universal enchantments:
- Density V (from vault loot)
- Unbreaking III + Mending — both compatible, and essential since smash attacks consume durability fast
- Wind Burst on a second mace if you also want smash-chaining mobility
Play patterns that maximize Density:
- Ledge camping: fight near cliff edges or balcony rails and step off into hits.
- Ender pearl setups: pearl upward or onto high ground mid-fight, then drop-smash.
- Boss drops: falling onto the Ender Dragon during its perch phase, or onto a warden from a dug shaft, produces some of the biggest single hits in the game.
- Bubble column elevators: soul sand columns lift you up for a repeatable drop attack.
Between smashes, swap to an enchanted sword — a ground-level mace hit is weaker than a best-in-slot sword, and the general enchantment economy behind combining books is covered in our full enchanting guide.
Things to Watch Out For
- Fall damage is still yours to manage: the mace negates your own fall damage on a successful smash, but a missed hit means you take the full fall. Practice timing before attempting 20-block drops.
- Useless without height: on flat terrain against ground-level mobs, Density contributes nothing. That is why many players carry a Density mace and a normal sword.
- Exclusivity is a commitment: a grindstone strips all mace enchantments at once, so pick Density only after deciding you will not need Breach on the same weapon.
- Edition parity: the mace and its three enchantments shipped together in 1.21 for Java and Bedrock; Density's per-block scaling is the same idea in both, with minor number rounding differences.
- Solo vs multiplayer asymmetry: in single-player boss fights you can pause positioning mistakes; on servers, an opponent who watches you climb a drop tower simply walks away. Density maces therefore shine brightest in PvE and in duels fought around terrain you prepared in advance.
Density Numbers in Real Fights
Putting the scaling into context helps when deciding whether the enchantment is worth a vault grind:
| Scenario | Practical Outcome with Density V |
|---|---|
| 5-block drop onto a zombie (20 HP) | One-shot with huge overkill |
| 8-block drop onto a warden (500 HP) | Removes roughly a tenth of its health in one hit |
| 10+ block drop onto the Ender Dragon | Among the largest single hits possible in vanilla |
| Ground-level swing | No Density benefit at all |
The warden row deserves emphasis: conventional weapons struggle against 500 HP plus its sonic-boom ranged attack, while a Density mace from a tall pillar stacks massive single hits with almost no risk if you time the jumps. Bosses with predictable positions — the dragon's perch phase, the wither's initial charge — are likewise ideal targets, since you can pre-build a drop tower around the arena.
Setting Up Drop Towers and Smash Positions
Because Density rewards height, prepared positions multiply its value:
- The pillar tower: build a 10–15 block pillar with a ladder or scaffolding beside your target area. Climb, drop, smash, and repeat — each cycle lands a Density-boosted hit while the mace negates your own fall damage.
- The shaft trap for wardens: when a warden emerges in the deep dark, lure it under a pre-dug 12-block shaft and drop in from the surface. Two or three cycles kill it without it ever reaching you.
- The ender-pearl exchange: carry pearls for open-field fights — toss one onto a high ledge, take the teleport, and come down smashing.
- Wind charge assists: breeze rods craft wind charges, and a well-timed charge under your own feet provides cheap, repeatable height mid-fight.
Every setup follows the same principle: convert flat ground into vertical distance right before the hit. Players who fight exclusively on flat terrain get nothing from Density — the enchantment's power is really the mobility playbook built around it.
